W.O.W.

For Christmas, my in-laws (by which I mean, in every way possible but lawfully) gave me a Kindle Touch. I felt like I was instantly that kid in the corner of the library with a giant stack of books that couldn't possibly be read in one day - except that giant stack is now literally at my fingertips.

........Ah, the power........
But with all of the books that I put on my Kindle, there is one that I just started yesterday that already deserves a personal blog shout-out for combining two things I love - Food and Spirituality. The book is called The W.O.W. Diet by Michelle Snow.

As anyone from Utah would instantly recognize, the acronym for W.O.W. in the books title refers to the word of wisdom and this book talks about the dietary guidelines from the major world religions and spiritual practices. The book is written from Ms. Snows personal experience - and once you get past the somewhat awkward first two chapters of her... ahem, irregularity... and what sparked this entire research excursion, the information that follows is amazing.

I know I may be getting ahead of myself since I just started this book - in fact, Mr. Kindle tells me that I am only 16% through the book right now. As I read more of this book, I'll be sure to cite interesting facts here on this blog. But for anyone who is curious about other religions stances on what and what not to eat and why they believe it (while giving specific references in sacred texts, scriptures and writings), will find this book a very interesting read. Perhaps this strikes a chord with me because I grew up in a religion with very specific instruction regarding food and drinks and who participated in a church-wide fast once a month. It's fascinating to see how the the food and drink we put into our bodies, whether for pleasure, nourishment or other, can be deeply related to us spiritually. For many people, the spiritual aspect of who we are is as much of our daily life as eating is.

So - the purpose of this brief blog entry is to think about your own life. Does food and drink relate to &/or effect your spiritual life?
